2011 — “The Commandant’s Own” will open this year’s program with the popular Broadway standard Don’t Rain on my Parade. This piece has been performed by Barbra Streisand in both the Broadway musical and film versions of “Funny Girl.” Composed by Bob Merrill with Jule Styne, Don’t Rain on my Parade quickly became one of Streisand’s signature tunes and continues to be a popular hit through television and movie productions.
Published in 1947, Fiddle Faddle was based on the childhood nursery song “Three Blind Mice.” This composition, by Leroy Anderson, has been recorded numerous times and remains a highly recognizable melody worldwide. Orchestrated by Master Sgt. Billy Rulapaugh and Lance Cpl. John Williams, our percussion section performs a lighthearted classical favorite.
Composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring is often described as one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the 20th Century. First performed in October 1944 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., this selection became an instant masterpiece within American music. Composed for a ballet by Martha Graham, this story is a celebration of the early pioneers of the 1800’s and evokes the spirit of the American experience.
The Drum & Bugle Corps continues with a medley from one of the most popular film series of the last decade, Walt Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Composed by Klaus Badelt, this defining medley highlights the popular themes of the film series, with “Fogbound,” “He’s a Pirate,” and “To the Pirates Cave.”
Composed by the Director of “The Commandant’s Own,” Reveille is dedicated to those brave men and women known as America’s Wounded Warriors. Based on the classic American military bugle call of the same name, Reveille highlights the daily courage with continued conviction of these truest of national heroes.
Debuting in 1896 John Philip Sousa’s The Stars and Stripes Forever became a musical calling card for our nation. Through U.S. Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, and designated in 1987, we are proud to close this performance with The Official National March of the United States of America.
