2011 Program: AfriCore Untamed
A five-year odyssey of survival, success and the pursuit of new adventures describes Fusion Core’s journey since joining the ranks of DCA in 2007. With this year's original presentation, “AfriCore Untamed: Survival, Savannah & Stampede,” the defending Class A World Champions invite you to experience the excitement of their youth, the beguiling maturity of their present and the glorious horizons that embody tomorrow, hand painted on the breathtaking canvas of the African landscape.
“Survival,” based on the Main Theme from Robert W Smith’s “Africa” and an original percussion score by Terrell Smith, juxtaposes angst, mystery and danger as the corps breathlessly escapes the impending peril of Osvaldo Camahue’s “Burning Dance” and seeks shelter and tranquility amid the primitive wilderness.
With its signature mellophone section performing a high-wire act of sixteenth note sprints, the fleet-of-foot corps breaks out of the jungle to discover the awesome majesty of Wataru Hokoyama’s “Savannah.” Lush panoramas are brought to life through the chorale expressions of James Riley’s brass arrangements and the interpretive beauty of Daniel Bostic’s award-winning color guard as the ensemble captures, for a few precious moments, a soaring sense of freedom and a fleeting repose.
But the spirit of Africa is not easily harnessed as the quiet rumbling of drums in Smith’s “Moroccan Nights” unleashes the full fury of nature in “Stampede.” Selections from Hans Zimmer’s “The Lion King” revisit the splendor, wonder and magnificent power of Africa, with a high velocity finish that is purely Fusion Core … Untamed!
